Application

You may apply online or submit your printed application form by mail, fax, or delivery. Before beginning your application, you are advised to read the Tuition and Fees, Calendar, Program, and application procedures sections of the catalogue carefully; you are responsible for knowing and adhering to the policies and procedures explained therein.

Online Application

You may apply to the Secondary School English Language Program online if:

  • you can include with your application a minimum credit card payment of the $40 nonrefundable application fee,
  • you have no tuition waivers or third-party payments, and
  • you can download and mail, fax, or deliver those sections of the application that can not be submitted online (see below).

Three parts of the application form cannot be filled out online: the Supplementary Application (FORM SIEL-I), Teacher Report (FORM SIEL-II), and Counselor Report (FORM SIEL-III). These forms must be filled out manually and submitted by mail, fax, or delivery. You will be prompted to download the forms during the online application process. Before beginning online application, you should download and print the Online Application Instructions and Checklist at the bottom of this page to make sure you complete your application.

Online Application Process

The Secondary School English Language Program online application is a multi-step process. You will be prompted to:

  • Fill in your name, address, and biographical information
  • Make a credit card payment
  • Submit international student information
  • Download and print FORMS SIEL-I, II, and III

If you are eligible to apply online and have reviewed the application procedures listed below, please proceed to online application.

Apply by Mail, Fax, or Delivery

Students who do not apply online must complete downloadable application forms or use forms from the back of the printed catalogue, and mail, fax, or deliver them with the required payment to 51 Brattle Street by the deadlines printed in the Calendar. Students who fax their forms should not mail their originals or fax duplicate copies of the same form, as this could result in additional credit card charges. They should call (617) 495-4024 on the next business day to confirm receipt. Students also may drop their forms and payments (24 hours a day) in the registration box just inside the front gate at 51 Brattle Street. Students should not send cash through the mail or via courier service.

Application Procedures

Applicants must submit all parts of the Secondary School English Language Program application and a $40 nonrefundable application fee by May 10, 2002. Along with the application form, a handwritten essay corrected by the student's current English teacher is required. Early application is encouraged because enrollment is limited, and a late-payment fee is charged to all SIEL students whose bills are not paid in full by May 31, 2002. Applications received after May 10 will be considered only if space in the program is available.

The admissions committee looks for mature, academically motivated students who demonstrate potential for success in a college environment. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that all necessary materials reach the program office in sufficient time to be considered. The admissions committee considers students only after all application and supplementary materials have been received. A decision letter usually is sent within a week of that time. Admitted students will be sent housing applications with their admission packets, along with more information about University facilities and policies.

The Summer School is not responsible for forms and payments that are lost in transit. Admission to the Summer School does not imply admission to Harvard College or any Harvard graduate or professional school. The Summer School Administrative Board reserves the right not to accept an application from a student who has been required to withdraw from another Harvard school or course.

Harvard University does not discriminate among applicants and students in admissions, educational policies, scholarship programs, or in athletic and other programs on the basis of race, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, color, or disability.

Harvard Summer School reserves the right to make changes to the information on this website. Every effort will be made to inform students of these changes. Course and program descriptions are intended to be summaries.
